When are the Sewing Machine Kits available for use?

Sewing Machine Kits are available only to selected Ready, Set, Sew participants. Interested patrons must apply through the program application process. Accepted students may check out a Sewing Machine Kit for the duration of the 6-week workshop series (June – July).

For program details and application information, visit the Ready, Set, Sew Program Page.

Am I allowed to take the Sewing Machine Kit home?

Yes. Students may take the Sewing Machine Kit home and are required to bring the complete kit to every class session.

Where does the library obtain fabrics, trimmings, and other sewing materials?

The library receives donated materials from the Alhambra community and is continuing to build partnerships to support the program. Donations of fabrics, trimmings, and other sewing supplies are welcome.

Where did the library purchase the sewing machines?

The program uses several sewing machines, including the Singer Heavy Duty 8832 Sewing Machine purchased through Costco.

Baby Lock sewing machines were funded through EmPOWERing Access, a partnership with the Southern California Library Cooperative. This initiative helps California libraries provide new opportunities for learning and skill development.

How often should I attend class?

Students are required to attend all 6 mandatory classes. Each lesson builds on the previous session, and attendance is necessary to complete the assigned projects and coursework.

Students who miss a class may be dismissed from the program and required to return the Sewing Machine Kit.

Can I switch to a different instructional sewing class?

Students are expected to remain in their assigned class session. Placement is determined based on the information provided in the application.

Can I keep the projects I sew and create?

Yes. All Ready, Set, Sew participants may keep the projects they complete during the program.

Can I use the Maker Lab outside of class time?

The Maker Lab is available to Ready, Set, Sew students during scheduled class sessions. Sewing machines may be used in the Maker Lab during class or at home.

I’m stuck on a project at home. What should I do?

Instructors will provide take-home resources and guidance after each class session. If you need additional help or have questions about your sewing machine, please contact the Maker Lab team at makerlab@alhambralibrary.org.
